From 13 to 16 September, a new edition of the IBTTA Global Tolling Summit was held in Lyon, France, an international meeting that brings together the main players in the tolling and mobility industry to exchange experiences, explore new technologies and discuss critical issues such as road safety, user experience, green mobility and sustainability.
This year from Globalvia we have been represented by our colleague Ruth Gomar, Head of Operating Systems at Globalvia, who has been part of the panel “Solving the Workforce Puzzle in 24/7 Operations”, sharing space and conversations with top-level international representatives: Tawnya Freund, Chief Commercial Officer at ViaPlus by VINCI Highways; Sidney Edmonds, Managing Director at Accenture; Des Tillmann Bushman, Managing Director at Accenture; and Luis A. Mafra, MSc, Head of Business Development – Europe at A-to-Be by Brisa Group.

Specifically, in her presentation “Shaping the Tolling System of the Future: Practical Case Studies”, Ruth explained four initiatives of the Globalvia Group that reflect our commitment to operational resilience, intelligent automation and sustainability:
📌 AP-53 Case | Galicia: on the use of AI and optical character recognition (OCR) to identify vehicle entry points, even when electronic toll data is incomplete. Developed in collaboration with Openvia and Tecsidel, this solution improves traceability, operational accuracy and cybersecurity, and is scalable for future concessions.
📌 Ruta 27 Case | Costa Rica: on the advantages we have obtained by automating toll roads with remote control systems, smart sensors and centralized management platforms. This automation process allows us to operate without constant physical presence, adapt to hybrid work models, reduce costs and improve the user experience. Electronic payments have increased significantly and cash payments are expected fall from 38% in 2021 to only 12% in 2026.
📌 Ruta Portuaria Case | Colombia: on how we managed to increase the reliability of our toll system from 86% in 2021 to 99.8% in 2024 through the AI-powered validation system . In addition, Ruth also focused on explaining how there has been a significant shift towards electronic payments in Ruta Portuaria: from 100% cash transactions three years ago to 42% electronic and interoperable payments today, far exceeding the national target of 15%. Automated vehicle sorting and fraud prevention have made the process more efficient and transparent.
📌 Transmontana Case | Portugal: on the digital twin project at the Viaducto do Corgo, which demonstrates the benefits of this technology and the BIM model for real-time control of infrastructure and predictive maintenance. The digital twin integrates data from sensors and inspections, enabling scenario simulation, anomaly detection, and data-driven decision-making. This approach minimizes operational interruptions, optimize maintenance programs and supports management sustainable infrastructure.
We thank Ruth for representing us and raising awareness of four of our key initiatives that strengthen our operations, integrate smart solutions, and promote a more sustainable future!
