Safety begins with the commitment of those who make it possible. As leaders in transport infrastructure, we promote various initiatives in road and railway safety with the same objective: taking care of those who move on our roads and through our railways.
For this reason, from our Societies, we repeatedly launch different activities, training, and awareness campaigns on this matter, which seek to bring Road and railway safety closer to the various audiences and users of our assets and, especially, raise awareness among the little ones.
For example, through its “I am responsible” program, our team in Costa Rica, Ruta 27, has been giving talks and awareness sessions in schools near our highway since 2014, positively impacting 100 children yearly. Through dynamics and games, they learn how to be responsible cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers. In addition, this program incorporates a section dedicated to environmental protection, in which students learn about recycling, waste utilization, care of seas and oceans, and reforestation, among other subjects.
Our teams also organize this type of activity in their own facilities. For example, our Portuguese team Beira Interior, invited a group of 50 children from schools near our concession to visit the Lardosa assistance and maintenance center last summer to experience their daily work first-hand. During the visit, they toured the facilities, visited the control center, and stopped to see our road safety vehicles. Fellow volunteers also offered an awareness session on road safety.

A school group visited our facilities in Lardosa, Portugal.
At Pocahontas Parkway in United States, our team collaborates with DriveSmart Virginia, a non-profit entity, to promote responsible and safe driving and thus improve safety for both users and road workers.
In this last area, the Smartworker project of our Openvia Mobility team stands out. Using AI and IoT, this innovative system is capable of detecting and warning in real time about unauthorized intrusions into road work zones by external vehicles, minimizing risks and preventing accidents. This improves safety for both road workers and road users.
In terms of railway safety, Metros Ligeros de Madrid periodically offers guided tours aimed at schoolchildren and seniors. These tours bring the experience of public transport closer to users, promoting values such as sustainability, safety, and respect.
At the Barcelona TRAMs, the team opens its doors to groups of students from master’s programs in various subjects such as urban planning, sustainability and different engineering, giving them the opportunity to learn first-hand about the operation of the tram and the integration of technology and sustainability in the tram system of the metropolitan region.
