At Globalvia we advance in our climate commitment and achieve carbon neutrality in Spain and Costa Rica
06-04-2021

• Sustainability is part of our business strategy and our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and, in this specific case, to SDG13-Climate Action.
• 64% of the energy we consume comes from renewable energies.

At Globalvia we have achieved carbon neutrality in 2020 in six companies of our main business lines: Railways Spain (Metro de Sevilla and Tranvía de Parla) and Spain and Costa Rica Highways: ACEGA (Autopista Central Gallega), Ruta de los Pantanos, Concesiones de Madrid and Ruta 27. To this list are also added our corporate offices in both Spain and Chile.

“We continue to work together at Globalvia to ensure we make the greatest contribution possible to reaching the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) forming part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” Javier Pérez Fortea, CEO of Globalvia.

The carbon footprint is an indicator that measures the amount of greenhouse gases that a company emits into the atmosphere. Carbon neutrality is achieved by balancing the emissions released with the emissions removed, thus producing a neutral balance, also called a zero carbon footprint.

In our commitment to mitigating and adapting to climate change, at Globalvia we continuously monitor our emissions and implement reduction programs in the first instance, having managed to reduce our CO2 emissions by 19% in our own operations in 2020. Additionally, on our way to decarbonisation, we have implemented a compensation plan for those emissions that we have not yet been able to reduce or eliminate, thus allowing us to neutralize our Carbon footprint.

During 2020 at Globalvia we have offset a total of 1,401 tons of CO2 emitted by investing in two biomass plant projects in Arauco (Chile), close to our Chilean highways, through the United Nations Carbon offset programs within the framework of the Clean Development Mechanism for Climate Change.

In addition, as part of our sustainability strategy, in 2020 we have joined the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, which seeks the transition to a low-carbon economy by promoting the establishment of science-based greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

For two years, at Globalvia we have been world leaders in Sustainability in Highway Management, according to the international benchmark ranking prepared by the independent organization GRESB, established in 2009 by investors from all over the world to measure environmental, social and corporate governance commitment.

At Globalvia we are changing the world TOGETHER!
